Description
A Blend of Two Traditional Japanese Crafts
Bring the soothing ambiance of a Japanese summer into your living space with this exquisite handcrafted wind chime (furin). This piece beautifully combines the delicate artistry of Shizuoka’s Suruga bamboo crafts with the clear, resonant tone of Nambu ironware from Iwate Prefecture.
Inspired by Zen Tradition
The outer cage is inspired by the Komuso—mendicant Zen Buddhist monks known for wearing dome-like woven bamboo basket hats (tengai) to represent selflessness. Handcrafted from domestic Japanese round bamboo strips (maru-takehigo), the bamboo is degreased and dried to a clean, natural pale ivory tone. The top dome features an intricate, tight bamboo weave known as nankin-ami.
The Pure Sound of Nambu Ironware
Suspended inside the bamboo dome is a traditional Nambu iron bell. Crafted in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Nambu ironware is celebrated for its exceptional quality and its high-pitched, crystal-clear ringing sound. This gentle, clear tone has been selected as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan” to be preserved for future generations.
