Elegant Suruga Bamboo Craftsmanship

Experience the delicate beauty of Suruga Take Sensaku (Suruga bamboo ware), a traditional craft from Shizuoka Prefecture. This “Ko-Sozen” flower vase is hand-assembled by skilled artisans using fine, rounded bamboo strips (higo) to create a striking, airy lattice design that highlights the natural elegance of bamboo.

Intricate Details and Traditional Techniques

This exquisite vase is crafted using 104 individual bamboo strips, each measuring just 1.1 mm in thickness. To secure them, 312 tiny holes are meticulously hand-drilled across three circular frames. Because a single row cannot accommodate all 104 holes on a 55 mm frame, the artisan drills two staggered rows of 52 holes, creating a beautiful layered lattice. The base features a tightly woven ajiro-ami (herringbone-style) weave made from 9 mm wide fan ribs, while the handle is wrapped in natural rattan for a textured accent. The entire piece is finished in deep black to provide a bold, sophisticated presence.
