Suruga Bamboo Craft Basket Bag with Vintage Silk Drawstring Pouch

$454

A meticulously hand-woven basket bag made of 1.2mm Suruga bamboo strips from Shizuoka, paired with a detachable red leather handle and a vintage silk drawstring inner pouch.

Description

Traditional Shizuoka Craftsmanship

This exquisite basket bag is crafted using Suruga Take Sensaku (Suruga bamboo craft), a traditional handcraft from Shizuoka Prefecture. It showcases the distinctive heat-bending technique characteristic of this region, creating a refined rectangular shape using ultra-fine 1.2 mm bamboo strips (higo). The subtle dark marks inside the inner corners are authentic scorched traces from the heat-shaping process, which permanently stabilizes the wood to ensure lasting structural integrity.

Versatile and Functional Design

Despite its delicate appearance, the bag is highly durable, built with ten reinforcing rectangular frames. It features a detachable genuine red leather handle; simply remove it to transform the basket into an elegant interior display or storage container. The bag easily accommodates daily essentials such as a small wallet, smartphone, and a miniature water bottle.

Vintage Silk Kinchaku

The interior is fitted with a removable kinchaku (traditional Japanese drawstring pouch). The outer fabric is made from premium vintage silk dating back to the mid-Showa period (circa mid-20th century), beautifully adorned with a classic kasumi (mist) pattern. The lining is made of sturdy No. 11 canvas for added strength and structure.
